Duke Silver

Duke came to us in May 2020 from Chill Pepper - Miracle Mustang. He had lost his is home, his family, and herd, and was going to be sent to an auction when they stepped in and promised to find him a permanent place. Well, we had just the spot! Duke was transferred to WHOA! and brought to the sanctuary.

Earl.

Earl is with us by fate and faith in our supporters. We had to buy him, it was $1000 then we had to transport him another $675. We couldn’t let him go out a back door to an unknown and unkind fate. He’s the absolute sweetest mule, loves attention and hugs and being with humans. Earl got himself into mischief, he went on an adventure, was captured by a trapper, sold to a kill pen, bought off the shipper, and then went back to his original owner, who is a trader. His chances of getting out of the cycle was narrowed as he would not be sold publicly after all that. We had a hunch after seeing a post on Facebook and chose to send out some text to inquire on his future, we offered to give him a fresh start in life, and so, here he is.

An absolutely amazing supporter has pledged to sponsor Earls first couple months for rehab and evaluation. That’s a HUGE help!

Molly

30 year old draft mule off the Moses Lake feedlot. Purchased with donations from a dedicated fundraiser. She is overall healthy with no lameness or ailments. She was underweight when she arrived, and has quickly gained. She will live out her senior years at the sanctuary.

Snip

From starved, abused, and suffering from untreated motor neuron disease and eye cancer, to now healthy and able to race around the pasture with the thoroughbreds. We love you Snipper, to the moon.

Lance

Lance was emaciated and suffering from horrible hoof abscesses when Kara took him in. Since being brought back to health he had to have his right eye removed after an injury. And we all remember his leg injury in summer 2020. He’s a powerhouse! He’s been through so much and prevailed.

Timber

Timber is a 13 year old 16hh Off track thoroughbred (OTTB) who didn’t enjoy racing, AT ALL. Timber is a sanctuary resident adopted (and cared for personally) by Kara that was pulled from the Eugene Horse auction by @harmonynewbeginnings in 2014.

Misty

Misty is a mid-teens OTTB. When she was retired from racing she went on to be a solid trail horse. She’s been rescued 3x’s from neglect and starvation. In her first rescue by Kara she was starved and kept housed in a GREENHOUSE. Her hooves were rotted and she lost half of her hoof capsule. She also had a festering infected leg wound. She was fixed up, fed, and her hooves were repaired. She was adopted out to a "friend" who starved and neglected her badly, Kara took her back and placed her in a home under contract, this person came highly recommended from many trusted friends. There she was further neglected and starved. Kara once again pulled her, brought her back the rescue and rehabbed her. She has uveitis in her right eye and will stay with us permanently as a result of all she’s been through.

Josie is a 30+ year old (we think) hackney pony. In July 2021 we were asked to help a horse with only 24 hours before arriving at the wild cat park. A small skinny senior mare had been passed through 4 homes in less than a year and her punishment for getting old was to become a tigers dinner. 3 decades of service wasn’t enough for a dignified end. So we said yes we would give her compassion and love for as long as she needed. As a super senior she has no chewing surface for eating hay, which then needs to be supplemented with chopped forage, grains, oats, and pasture. All of her needs are being met at the sanctuary. Other than a special diet and vision impairment, she is a beautiful, healthy, no maintenance horse that is enjoying her golden age retirement.

Charlie Brown

Charlie arrived at the sanctuary by owner surrender on February 20, 2021 weighing an estimated 845 lbs. He’s in his 30’s and was suffering from lack of dental care. We began his rehab with diet and nutrition for emaciated horses and had him evaluated by our veterinarian. His dental procedure was split into 2 appointments due to the amount of work needed. Unfortunately, he has lost all chewing surface on his molars and is unable to chew hay like a “normal” horse. He is supplemented with a grain diet. He shed out his guard hairs to reveal a healthy black coat. He will remain at the sanctuary for the remainder of his life.

“China Doll” came to us with “little” Misty by owner surrender due to the Estacada labor day fire in Sept 2020 taking her home. When she arrived she was severely over weight (500+lbs). She was diagnosed with a collapsed trachea. Since her time in sanctuary she has lost over 200lbs and is feeling great. She’s 23 years old, a bit shy, and will remain with us for the remainder of her life.

Forest

Pumba

Sophia came to us as part of a trio of senior 25+ year old micro mini’s rescued in March of 2021 by another organization. In need of permanent sanctuary we offered a spot for them in our program. They arrived at our fabulous fosterer in April 2021 to begin rehab and retirement. Sadly, a few months later Blanche passed away due to kidney failure. Sophia and Rose arrived at the main barn in March 2022 where Rose passed on March 8, 2023. Sophia, loveingly referred to as “the tiny red dragon” remains in our mini sanctuary herd.
