ABOUT US
WHOA! is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit equine rescue and sanctuary dedicated to the protection, rehabilitation, and lifelong care of at-risk horses. Our mission is to serve abandoned, neglected, abused, or elderly equines by offering safety, healing, and hope through compassionate care and strong community collaboration.
We believe that every horse deserves dignity — whether it’s a second chance at a new life or a peaceful retirement in sanctuary. WHOA! is committed to making that possible through four core pillars:
1. Sanctuary for the Unadoptable
We provide permanent refuge to equines who are no longer adoptable due to age, injury, or trauma. These horses become part of our sanctuary herd and receive ongoing medical care, emotional support, and the freedom to live out their lives with respect and comfort.
2. Rehabilitation and Rehoming
For horses with the potential for recovery and adoption, we offer individualized care, including veterinary treatment, nutrition, groundwork, and trust-based training. Our goal is to help each horse become healthy, confident, and prepared to thrive as a companion or riding partner in a safe, appropriate home.
3. Community Outreach and Advocacy
We work within the broader horse community to provide alternatives to auction and prevent horses from falling into the slaughter pipeline. Through direct support to owners, we assist with networking, fundraising, responsible euthanasia when needed, and crisis intervention. We also offer education and resources to reduce neglect and encourage responsible horse stewardship.
4. Partnerships with Law Enforcement and Animal Services
WHOA! actively partners with law enforcement agencies and animal control services in equine cruelty cases, seizures, and investigations. We provide emergency shelter, documentation, rehabilitation, and expert testimony as needed — ensuring that abused or criminally neglected horses receive immediate care and a path to safety.
By combining rescue, sanctuary, and community action, WHOA! works to break the cycle of neglect and give every horse a future worth living. We are proud to be a trusted voice for the voiceless and a safe place for equines in need.
